De term ‘waterdicht’ bij horloges is vaak misleidend. In de horlogewereld spreken we daarom liever over waterbestendigheid. Een horloge wordt namelijk niet getest in elke denkbare situatie, maar onder gecontroleerde laboratoriumomstandigheden.

De waterbestendigheid wordt uitgedrukt in ATM/bar of meters. Dit is géén letterlijke diepte-aanduiding, maar een maat voor de druk die het horloge aankan tijdens de test. Bijvoorbeeld:
•3 ATM / 30m: getest op statische druk tot 3 bar. In de praktijk alleen bestand tegen spatwater en regen.
•5 ATM / 50m: kan kortdurend tegen hogere druk, geschikt om mee te douchen of zwemmen aan de oppervlakte.
•10 ATM / 100m en hoger: bestand tegen hogere dynamische druk, geschikt voor snorkelen en soms duiken (afhankelijk van de specificaties).

Belangrijk om te weten:
•De tests worden gedaan met stilstaand water en constante druk. In de praktijk is er sprake van dynamische druk (bijvoorbeeld als je zwemt of in water springt), wat de belasting aanzienlijk verhoogt.
•Temperatuurwisselingen (heet douchen, sauna, koude plons) veroorzaken uitzetting en krimp van pakkingen, waardoor vocht kan binnendringen.
•Zepen, chloor en zout water tasten de rubberen afdichtingen aan, waardoor de waterbestendigheid met de tijd afneemt.
•Ook de kroon en pushers zijn zwakke punten: als deze niet goed gesloten zijn, kan water binnendringen.

Daarom is het belangrijk te beseffen dat geen enkel horloge 100% waterdicht is. Zelfs professionele duik-horloges hebben onderhoud nodig: de pakkingen moeten periodiek worden vervangen en de waterbestendigheid moet opnieuw getest worden om de opgegeven rating te kunnen garanderen.

The term “waterproof” is often misleading when it comes to watches. In the watch industry, we therefore prefer to talk about water resistance. This is because watches are not tested in every conceivable situation, but under controlled laboratory conditions.

Water resistance is expressed in ATM/bar or metres. This is not a literal depth indication, but a measure of the pressure the watch can withstand during testing. For example:
•3 ATM / 30m: tested at static pressure up to 3 bar. In practice, only resistant to splashes and rain.
•5 ATM / 50m: can withstand higher pressure for a short period of time, suitable for showering or swimming on the surface.
•10 ATM / 100m and higher: resistant to higher dynamic pressure, suitable for snorkelling and sometimes diving (depending on the specifications).

Important to know:
•The tests are carried out with still water and constant pressure. In practice, there is dynamic pressure (for example, when swimming or jumping into water), which significantly increases the load.
•Temperature changes (hot showers, saunas, cold splashes) cause expansion and contraction of gaskets, allowing moisture to penetrate.
•Soaps, chlorine and salt water attack the rubber seals, reducing water resistance over time.
•The crown and pushers are also weak points: if they are not properly closed, water can penetrate.

It is therefore important to realise that no watch is 100% waterproof. Even professional diving watches require maintenance: the gaskets must be replaced periodically and the water resistance must be retested to guarantee the specified rating.
